 3rd Annual Wilson
Globe Beography Bee
Sponsored by the Bradford Historical
Society
Saturday November 14, 1:00
p.m. Oxbow High School Bradford, VT
James Wilson produced
the first globes made in North American at his workshop off
Fairground Road, Bradford, VT. After fourteen years of
efforts, he sold the first globes in 1810. This is a story of
perseverance and ingenuity, traits we still encourage. Wilson's
globes became widely available in the next four decades.
However, there are only four of the undated first-year globes
remaining. The Bradford Historical Society owns one of these four.
In preparation for its bicentennial, that globe is currently
being conserved and restored by the Williamstown (MA) Conservation
Center. This Geography Bee is being held to assist the campaign to
raise the $25,000 needed for that project. If successful, this event
will bring the total amount raised to almost 100% of the needed
funds.
Teams from Thetford
Academy will appear in the Junior Division. Thetford
Historical Society's Adult Division team will compete again, as
well.
*** November 14th
Results!!! Two 7th Grade Youth Division Teams from Thetford
Academy, sponsored by the Historical Society, finished a
very impressive 3rd and 4th place. The Historical
Society's Adult team, in their third appearance, tied for 4th
place. Two weeks after the event, the grown-ups have finally
stopped kicking themselves and saying, I KNEW
that!!!***
